Quick query-- will be commuting into Manhattan from the Aloft Brooklyn (in Duffield Street) and coming back some nights after 10/midnight-ish. I understand the nearest two stations are Hoyt St. and Jay-Tech. Anyone know if the surrounding area is safe enough to walk back from at 10pmish at night?

It's a very quick walk from either of those two stations to the aloft. A bit further afar and still a safe walk is the Borough Hall station which provides access to the 4/5 as well.
