However it seems as though its a tiny bit of hassle to switch from the MRT to the airport link (also need to find the times).

Sunday traffic isn't usually that bad for the airport from previous experience. I think if I have time I'll try the Airport link, otherwise I may just taxi it.
You may find it challenging to get a taxi to take you the short distance (~ 1.5 km) between Asoke and Makkasan? Good news, traffic is not so bad heading in that direction most days/times. (The southbound side is perpetually grid-locked.)

If you want to ride the rails and have a lot of time just take the BTS in-bound to Phaya Thai and change to the SARL City Line, unless there is an express train about to depart. (I wouldn't suggest this on a weekday morning as in-bound BTS trains are quite full by the time they reach Asoke.) If you want to ride the subway, walk more, have to deal with MRT security, then take the MRT to Petchaburi, walk to CAT and take the SARL.

For a Sunday, a taxi just might be the easiest option? Clouds have been building over the past few days, and I saw someone selling umbrellas in the BTS station yesterday so maybe you can avoid an unseasonable downpour? The walk between the MRT and CAT includes a short-cut over a rock and dirt strewn corner which should get very muddy with rain.
