I never find it slows me down, just merge with the traffic when I reach the bottom of the stairs.

I love the upper deck for reasons already mentioned here, the same reason that I like to get in mini-cabins in planes that have them. The only drawback is the smaller overhead bin, when I carry a rollaboard they have to stow them in the cupboard as they won't fit.
