What seems to be puzzling to me is the fact that the flight left YYZ a few minutes ahead of schedule but is estimated to arrive ICN 5:09pm, 2h 9min behind schedule. Doesn't look like the flight is being diverted or making a tech stop anywhere. I'm not an aviation tech expert so I'm curious as to why there is such lengthy delay?
To keep it simple: GPS signal reliability has been compromised the last couple of days due to a solar event as mentioned above. To fly north of 78 degrees north, aircraft require GPS due to IRS drift rates and magnetic compass degradation. Thus, the aircraft have had to stay south of the most optimal route adding around 600 miles to the flight and where they face stronger headwinds.
