Unless it's changed recently, you can use foreign non-chip credit cards in the Tube ticket machines for small value transactions (£10 or less). More than that and you'd have to go to a ticket window and sign.

National Rail machines, on the other hand, machines would always work fine for any value.

That said, all my cards are chip & pin now days so its been a while (> 6 months) since I tried this.
