Not sure it matters. I rent weekly for work, and up til last year preferred Hertz, but then the corporate travel dept. started booking me with Avis. In some cities, Hertz is better; in others, Avis. Eventually you figure out who you prefer and where, but there really isn't much of a difference (I'm Avis First and Hertz 5*)
I also both Avis First and Hertz 5* and I agree with you. My experience is Avis is better with automatic upgrades (even form Premium to Luxury). Hertz's strength is that it often has more options of "unique" cars.
