Every UA cert I've seen applies only to UA metal flights; codeshares are not allowed. Do you have a credit or a cert?

In principle, you could buy a UA ticket to a place UA does fly, and then a second ticket on to Durban, but you would want to be sure to leave yourself a nice long stopover between tickets, since UA is not responsible for continuing travel on separate tickets.
