The obvious way to travel between Toronto and NYC is to get a BA credit card (isn't there a new promo?) and use 9000 Avios points roundtrip (+ modest taxes, something like $50) and take AA.

Aren't there similar BA cc promos in Canada now?

Unless you have no access to Avios points, I can't imagine flying that route any other way.
