As opposed to following a hotel/tourist map?
I sometimes use the GPS on my smartphone when "on a mission" in an unfamiliar city. Beats the hotel maps, and often doesn't look a lot different then browsing the web. Add in the ability to put some travel guidebook info on the phone & you have a winner. That said, I generally don't try and do this while actually walking - I'll stand off to the side or sit down to do this. Lower risk that way.
Sometimes I prefer to get lost - find some interesting things that way.
Agree completely, assuming I'm on a trip where I have the luxury of time.
