It's a tricky one, isn't it? Strictly speaking, the first flight of any booking under the 2012 gift needs to be in 2012. This does makes it difficult to redeem a 50% flight for early in Jan!

My recommendation is to call your local TG office (hopefully you have a relationship with someone there) and see if they can help you out. I've never tried this myself, but I would imagine they'll show some common sense flexibility and make the booking (TG is good at looking after ROP*Gs and *Ps).
