Came back from Berlin on Wednesday - albeit the closer South terminal, but landed at 22:40, and despite a lengthy walk, cleared immigration in 30 seconds, and was 20 minutes early for my 23:13 train.
I had pre-booked a Southern ticket for that train as it was £3, thinking that if I missed it, nothing really lost.
Havn't used Gatwick for zonks, but was really, really, really impressed. Walked away thinking I never want to use Heathrow again, and will be back at Gatwick next Wednesday, and looking forward to seeing the lounges and the North Terminal.
My only tip would be - if you are pre-purchasing tickets is maybe collect them on the way out if you expect to be on a rush on the retun. I was glad I did as those infernal machines didn't recognise my card and I had to queue up for 20 minutes.
