Correct. I had no status before getting Platinum status from the credit card. The only stay to my record is the use of my Anniversary night at the Hyatt Regency Osaka last December...which got me 10,000 points from the management after I complained about the loud WHOOSHING noises from the elevators that kept us awake most of the night.

I'd say it's a close enough decision that you should pick based on which location you want to try. If you choose Gora, don't forget to get Hakone free passes (which aren't free) from Odakyu, it's the only reasonable way to tour the area.
If we go to Hakone, we would almost certainly take our car.
