I do not fly for business but usually fly between 35-55k miles per year. I am currently a Delta Gold, but was thinking to switch over to UA because they seem to have more direct and frequent flights from NJ/NYC to the places we travel (Caribbean, TPA, LAS, LAX, TPE). I am too low and don't travel off peak times to really benefit from upgrades.
My wife and I usually do carry-on (~95% of the time).
We use reward miles for upgrades or full ticket depending on if it makes sense.
I have the presidential plus card, for now.
In the case above would it make sense for me to call UA for a FF match and switch airlines or due to my FF level it wont make much of a difference?
Thank you for your time.
It really depends on what airport you are flying out of in NYC. If you prefer EWR then I would say go with UA for sure seeing as they have a massive operation there they inherited from CO with the merger. However, if you are closer to LGA and JFK then DL is where you should look as they have such large international operations out of JFK which you could use for any Caribbean destination you were trying to reach and they are now really stepping up their domestic operations out of LGA. If you don't mind not getting upgrades it wouldn't really matter that NYC is a hub and can be elite heavy at times, but you may be surprised to receive a few upgrades to the locations you travel to as they tend to be less elite heavy than most.
