We also headed right to KTM late last year but on a CDG-BOM-KTM outbound itinerary. The connection was only 7 or 8 hours but overnight. AF personnel met us as we deplaned, gave us a passable place to sit and wait an hour or so (still in the sterile zone) while she got our bags, rechecked them to KTM and checked us in. Quite painlessly. We then went through an almost empty security and to a lounge to kill the remaining quiet hours.

The air can be explained by the pollution which is exaggerated as the mountains create a trapping sensation and during the dry season the pollution is stagnant with no way to escape. Leave the city.
We experienced all except the air was quite pleasant in the city (and throughout the country) in late October.
When leaving the city, try hard to spend time in the "Human Defecation Free Zones" which are scattered about, and announced with huge signs. It's a nice change.
