The single-shot machines, where the coffee grounds are in little cups (tubs) that get punctured upon activating the device, are about the best I've found in terms of in-room quality. I've never, ever seen instant coffee at a hotel in the States.

I have only visited the USA once, and we stayed in a Staybridge Suites in NYC. I thought that the fact that we had a coffee machine in the room (along with packs of perfectly acceptable Wolfgang Puck coffee, refreshed every day) was simply because we were in a "suite" type of room, with other household appliances also supplied.
Coffee machines, per se, are not to be found in many UK hotels unfortunately.
