It charges indeed. You can easily search at ba.com for booking airberlin flights with avios. They seem quite significant intra-EU from a quick look that I had. You can also make a dummy revenue booking at airberlin.com. The YQ and taxes that you will be quoted is pretty much exactly what BA will charge you for a redemption.
