We do get a kettle, but only little "sticks" of instant coffee, which I rarely ever drink --- I'm a Starbucks whore !

The single-shot machines, where the coffee grounds are in little cups (tubs) that get punctured upon activating the device, are about the best I've found in terms of in-room quality. I've never, ever seen instant coffee at a hotel in the States.
