It had more to do with the merging of their (CO and UA) information systems and the migration of frequent flyer numbers. It was not stupid at all to send out stickers. What is stupid is people in Munich not recognizing this given there are DAILY United Airlines flights out of Munich on a revenue share with Lufthansa.
