Sounds like you're advocating the elimination of all free upgrades. That's just what AA and other carriers that still offer very robust upgrade programs would need to fill seats. If UA does away with comped upgrades for 1K and GS flyers I can already hear the phones ringing at AA.
What level of elite status do you hold with UA? I'd be very surprised if you're a 1K. General member?

At least you had some advance notice when they made the changes to 1MM, announced back in September, that changes are afoot. That had me so irritated that in the 6 months since then I've put exactly one flight on UA and that was to burn off a $$400 voucher on a $482 fare. It was just a matter of time until 1K and UGS flyers got "enhanced", too.
