It's not impossible to OLCI for a connecting flight on EI because I managed to do it for a party of six about nine months ago, although I couldn't change any of the seat assignments.
Maybe you have to wait until the EI flight has opened for checkin?
I have gone on and it is not MMB BA says its not available

Yes - it is under 24hr and the gentleman at BA said I would have to wait till LHR to check in
The only number I was given is the booking ref for BA.
