Shouldn't be an issue, IME. I now have four Amex cards (2 personal, 2 OPEN). I no longer have the first Amex I opened back in '98 (I think it was Optim or something) but all my cards say "member since 1998" as does my account online. I don't remember having any problems canceling it, although it *was* a while back.
