Many more elderly travellers do genuinely prefer the coach - yes it takes longer, but there's the reassurance of the driver there to assist them, and the simplicity of it when compared to travelling by train (no need to find the right platform, worry about actually boarding the train in time, and change at the right place). For many such travellers, the coach is the less stressful and more straightforward way to travel (a thought that might be something of an anathema to your average jet-setting FT-er, but I think you'll find the profile of NX coach passengers supports this.)
Granted, Liverpool Lime Street to London Euston is a pretty simple journey on a direct train - both the origin and destination stations having the advantage of being termini stations, so for instance an uncertain traveller could successfully locate and board the train in their own time, and they wouldn't need to worry about getting off at the right station.

Though do bear in mind the Thameslink route doesn't run through central London on most weekends (nor late evenings) - however, weekend and all-night will resume in May, which is good news.
