It really depends on how your original fare was purchased. If it was a split fare at the connection point then you will have a few more options as you only need to find a flight that leaves sometime the same calendar day. If it was a through fare then you will need to leave within the maximum layover time (4 hours for domestic). Of course it can all depend on the agent helping you.
