This is a very bad idea. DL has no obligation to pay OP if he does something like that, and they definitely will not. Trying this would make a very simple situation very complex.

OP, you have an ABSOLUTE right to a FULL and IMMEDIATE refund from DL if they make this type of change to your itinerary. Since you seem new here you may not know that DL's phone agents are notoriously hit or miss. Not all of them know the rules and not all of them are helpful. Call again and get a helpful agent even if you have to call several times. You will get a refund with no problem. If for some reason you really cannot get the refund from DL, call your credit card company and have them remove the charge.

Meanwhile, get a new LGW flight that works for you.
