US did do that once in PHX. A couple of us on PHX-SLC flight were delayed and wanted to go to the club. They told us they'd call when they were ready to board. They did.
If you have a smartphone, there are some great apps out there that track flights and anytime changes are made. One told me about my last flight being delayed even though monitors showed no change. In some cases, I knew about the changes before the GAs announced it. If the departure time changes, it'll text me and I can plan accordingly.
It's not perfect, but it's helped me more often than not.
