It has a value for sorting baggage and related issues

NTFM
Just a short explanation of the seq. Nr. function: They are also printed on each baggage label besides you destination and the flights used.

Therefore it simplifies the sorting of baggage in a case of a no show even if you are in an environment which uses other types of letters, like the chinese language. Therefore the loader can also search for your (passenger) number.

Just think off the times were the baggage labels weren´t printed by a computer printer. So they just wrote in the flight number, date, destination and a pax number on the label.
