There was a thread in 2009 on FT that changes were coming in Marriott's attitude towards providing their guests with a morning paper delivered to the door...then the thread died. To my knowledge since that time newspapers were still being delivered, even at Marriott Timeshares where it's included in the owner maintenance charges. Looking at the 'benefits' part of the MR Elite 'profile' section, where you select what paper you want, the wording may have changed as newspaper delivery now looks 'optional' by location and brand.
Perhaps I'm old school, but I like to start my day reading the complete morning paper with my in room breakfast and coffee. I even like the ads. The 'incomplete' free news online doesn't do it for me. Newspapers sell ads based on distribution, not by giving it away free online, so you don't get all the news by design.
Since arriving at my Marriott BeachPlace timeshare this week I haven't received a morning paper at my door. They said since the beginning of 2012 the 'rules' were changed and they don't do room delivery even it your profile selects a paper choice.
Front desk 'Andy' said it was a new 'brand standard' to not deliver morning papers at BeachPlace or any other Marriott timeshares and hotels.
That is not correct as I spent 5 nights at the Marriott Singer Island last week and got a paper each morning at my door. Same with stays at JW Grand Lakes, Ritz Buckhead, and Marriott Covington the previous week.
I can see the value of asking each guest, at check in time, if they want newspaper delivery to cut back on waste, but not having that option at all seems more of a cost cut than protecting the environment.
Plus nobody at the front desk or in the elevator should have to suffer through seeing me in my bath robe.
