Yes it works, but depending on your bank and payment amount, you may have to call them up and tell them that the $500 payments weren't extra principal payments and should be added together to count as a "normal" mortgage payment (stumbled on this my first time).
That said, why buy gift cards? Why not just put $2,500 against your mortgage directly with the card? The only point to doing this is if you have an Amex (which chargesmart doesn't take) and you buy Visa gift cards to use.
