I have not heard of FJ offering preferred seating. But I could be wrong.

Worth the difference for J? Yes if the price is right. I helped a friend buy a return flight, but split into two separate tickets. A normal return was running about $842. By splitting, the outbound was was ~AUD420 in economy and the return was ~FJD1000 (or about ~AUD520). So by buying two one ways they got to 'upgrade' to biz class on the return for about $100.

FJ has also been known to offer cheap upgrades at the airport. Might be worth trying for the outbound if you decide to go the way of Y/J combo.
