I've done it before. I show up early at the airport and ask either the TA or the GA to put me on the earlier flight. Prob done this some 3x, and it worked every time.
Ask the agent to "SDC" on an earlier flight to ATL. My only experiences have been after an inbound international flights in ATL and LAX. The agents know the routine and don't bat an eye. They're also quick to point out that it'll cost $50.
