I believe that if you call American Express you can have them switch your card type from Platinum to Delta Reserve so you don't have to close the current account and keep the history and the credit limit.
That wont help the op because even if he just switches the card from plat to reserve, its still in his wife's name, so he wont get the benefits because the benefits only go to the primary card holder, meaning, he wont get lounge access unless he gets a reserve for the secondary card holder, which is an extra $150, and it also wont help him as a tie-breaker for upgrades
