AA would only issue NEW award tickets if the travel is within 5 days - apparently it is not an automatic ticketing process but involved a liason person to get in touch with CX. There are more up to date info in AA forum. Or, if your award reservation has already in place and CX system has it as confirmed, then AA would try to ticket it - however it has been a hit and miss - some (like self) are lucky to get it ticketed without hitch but some have been on request for days on end before theirs could be ticketed.
This is the same story I got from AA: they can only ticket an itinerary within 5 days. Very frustrating!
