Most of the status matches/challenges I've seen are front-loaded, expecting you to fly a disproportionate number of miles early-on to maintain that level. I would be in favor of a status match where you paid a fee up-front that was refunded when you met the milestone normally required for that status. Maybe that exists somewhere?

advertising its status matches.
To keep Premier status for the balance of the 2012** program year, you will need to complete a specific number of flights operated by United® (including Continental®), United Express® or Copa Airlines within the 90 day timeframe.
Premier Silver
Fly 10,000 qualifying flight miles or 15 flight segments to retain Premier Silver status
Premier Gold
Fly 17,500 qualifying flight miles or 22 flight segments to retain Premier Gold status
Premier Platinum
Fly 25,000 qualifying flight miles or 30 flight segments to retain Premier Platinum status
