As far as I know Amex will NOT let you switch over without re-applying. I have heard that you can "upgrade" without a credit check but not "downgrade".
Just keep the signup bonus, apply for the gold and when you get the gold, cancel the Platinum. When you call tell them the fees are so high and maybe they will give you back part of the Platinum fees (Pro-Rated), I've been successful in getting the fees back in later years but I haven't tried in the first year.

I had spent a lot the year i cancelled (over 50K) and they would NOT credit me anything. So I switched to a No-Fee card without re-applying and no credit check (at least not a hard one... perhaps a soft?)
