If you are Platinum, ask nicely for a suite upgrade, and can show that suites are available for your entire stay (using SPG.com), you WILL get an upgrade. But you will almost certainly have to wait until late afternoon to complete your check-in (due to suite guests checking out at 4 PM). I did it in 2011 on a 5-night stay and again just 2 days ago on a 13-night stay. The desk clerk will go to the front desk manager for approval, but it will happen. Both were on a stay using Starpoints. The Executive Suites are always on the corner of the hotel and very modern with floor-to-ceiling windows everywhere; they face two directions - much better than the ones at the SOTP.
On the other hand, if you silently accept whatever they give you, you will probably get the same room type that you reserved! So I am batting 100% but only because I was proactive. The one time I stayed at the Four Points, I did NOT get a suite upgrade. My experience at the SOTP has been mixed - about 50/50.
