The Amanpuri (Post Office Box 196, Surin Beach, Phuket; Bangkok office telephone 2500746-7) has 40 Thai-style bungalows of 1,200 square feet each, and all with sea views. A bungalow for two during the summer season costs $181 a day, from Nov. 1 to April 30, $302. Two restaurants serve Italian and Thai food; dinner for two is about $100. Amenities include swimming pool, tennis and squash courts as well as deep-sea fishing boats for hire.

Yes, I remember the really ' good old days ' when Amanpuri was the ' affordable Aman ' trailblazer & all team members were warm & well trained.
Now with the development of Phuket along with the profusion of resorts, sadly only a few original staff remain. These strive to keep training the ' newbies ' but it 's obviously an uphill task & to inculcate the Aman culture . Perhaps with so many villas, the GM also retreats more to his villa manager role ..

( While other family members began visiting Phuket in the pre - Aman era , my introduction to the island was Amanpuri & needless to say , a most pleasant induction )
