Had similar experience with LAX-HNL flight. Was told by knowledgable person at Chicago DO that the bus/first planes will be used on the long-haul routes and the ones that are currently showing up for the west coast flights are in transition. I got CPU on the bus/first flight from LAX, but it didn't clear pre boarding. FA came to find me after I was seated in coach and gave me bus seat boarding pass.
