Despite the clearly spelled out policy, this was not the story either United or Continental were telling a couple of weeks ago for my SFO-HNL flight. Both 1K and Platinum lines insisted that any BusinessFirst flight was not eligible for CPU, and I'd need to use either a regional or systemwide upgrade or miles. When I read them their own published policy, all they could do was repeat that since the flight had BusinessFirst, CPU did not apply. Turned out to be moot - at 24 hours they changed the equipment to a 757 and the CPU cleared.
Had similar experience with LAX-HNL flight. Was told by knowledgable person at Chicago DO that the bus/first planes will be used on the long-haul routes and the ones that are currently showing up for the west coast flights are in transition. I got CPU on the bus/first flight from LAX, but it didn't clear pre boarding. FA came to find me after I was seated in coach and gave me bus seat boarding pass.
