You should considering to take nonstop EWR/JFK-PHX or PHX-JFK/EWR. You don't have go through one-stop in DCA or ORD to spent much more time. Next time if you flying DL or CO/UA or US from PHX-JFK/EWR. You can have save the time.
I have done that many times, I used to fly to Phoenix nonstop 2 times a year on US Airways, jetBlue, and Delta, not Continental though, I live to far away from Newark. I know it saves more time but I like connecting because it gives me the opportunity to go to places i've never been and won't go to, even if it's just the airport. It's boring going non-stop, i'd rather have two 2 and a half hour flights with an hour layover than a 5 hour flight.
