Do a lot a of travelling and you'll soon take back your statement. My fully loaded backpack (laptop and camera gear) weighs around 8-10kg. It is very well padded, but with the alternative of being able to stick everything in a roller bag then it's a no-brainer for me, and it looks more professional.
I'm just about to board my 10th flight of the month, and my fully-loaded backpack weighs just under 23kg, more when I've got ceramic plates in it.
On crowded buses/trains I take it off and keep it at my feet. I then trip over the hoards of tow-behind bags dragged along in the race to the lift.

I find MAN has horrible staff. Consistently rude for no reason. By comparison last nights pat down procedure at IAD was professional and friendly. And it's TSA that have the bad attitude.
