Once picked up a rental car in Huntsville Alabama and, after 2 days, realized that it had no tags whatever. Called the company and they explained that temporary tags are not issued for new cars. If stopped you are supposed to just show the police the registration. The side effect was that I scrupulously obeyed speed limits for the rest of the week.
