It is quite possible we will be seeing more and more oversold flights. At some point, this unpublished benefit could come back to bite them when enough non-DMs begin to wise up to what is going on and get pi$$ed at being shoved, not to the back of the bus, but off the bus entirely by some DM on a T-fare.
In the end, we are all ham sandwiches and if the bean counters see a potential cut in profits because of customers going elsewhere, the need to offer IDB more often, etc. well, DMs may have to get in line with everyone else.
Then again, I may be completely wrong. My wife tells me it is a frequent reality.

There are often a few volunteers. Delta (mainline) only IDBs about 1 in 32,000 passengers. Even if the DM ranks swell and oversold flights become more common, I'd say you have some room before people get noticeably pissed off enough to ruin your airline. (For the record, United's IDB rate is over 3 times higher.)
