Any thoughts?
OK, so you buy the ticket, head to the airport, get a BP, go to the gate and ask the GA to put you on the volunteer list. She says to you "Wait here in the gate area until I know if I will need you or not." You wait until 10 minutes before departure when the GA says she won't need a volunteer, so please board. What will you say then? "Uh, no, I have better things to do than to board the flight for which I have a ticket and a boarding pass." Very suspicious.

Then there is the issue of refunding a ticket for which you have already checked in. That requires a phone call to "uncheck you in."

Availability in fare buckets has absolutely no correlation to how many physical seat assignments have been made. Many flights have Y0 but have a dozen or more seats still available - mainly because DL blocks so many seats until the last minute for elites. Many people would want to wait to get a seat assignment at the airport than book a middle seat.
