And how is this different from any other airport in India?

I was surprised to learn that US airports require everyone to take off their shoes before walking through metal detectors. It didn't help showing them that the shoes were not made of metal, they insisted that they be taken off.

Its crazy that nobody told me anything about it, and I haven't heard anything from the airline.

It was hell.
