It is clear they knew I was travelling with my family and the check-in agent wasn't planning on upgrading me since I was travelling with 3 others, so I think it can be safely assumed there was no way they would have upgraded all of us. I had to confirm with her that I was willing to be upgraded. This leads me to believe that the load manager in the back room likely passed me over for upgrade on the first two legs assuming the same, or would have had there been op-ups to J from Y.
