It'll vary by operator, but the standard-issue atrium-block ES paradigm has got to be 25 years old. A lot of them are tired. And bear in mind ES attracts a lot of kids, so endures more abuse. Every ES I'm in seems to have a roadtripping junior hockey team storming the place. But I stayed in one on the DTW perimeter last summer that broke that mold, it was a recently repurposed property with a lot of interesting design fillips, and thought it was terrific.
While I agree that many of these properties do get some hard use never the less the previous post is correct. Many of these properties have not undergone any type of updating for year. ( my company does a lot of hotel properties, exterior only) The owners have bled them to the point that some need almost a gut job!
I for one no avoid them, sometimes not able as I did in Santa Clara CA . There is so much perfume used in the hallways it at time unbearable to the point they have a fan going,
