I guess a UK person knows a bit more than I about such things.
I'd never noticed a passport control area within the Flight Connections Area. I walk through the maze and get on a bus and end-up at T5 and go through security and end-up on a plane to Italy without my passport being looked at. Hmmm, maybe I'm just too delirious after an 11 hour flight to remember that part.

you will go through passport control at your first point of entry into the UK ( at LHR) at the flight connections centre ( separate from the passport control area for pax who are finishing their journey at LHR)
You are then treated as a domestic passenger all the way to EDI ( no passport control for LHR flights at EDI).
