There is a pretty significant size mall Jersey Gardens about 7 mins from airport. I think the public bus (don't know number) can get you there from airport and back if your connections is lengthy enough.

Others, does AC in terminal A allow bus connection to Terminal C or only Co/UA
The bus would be the NJ Transit #62, but I wouldn't go that route unless you had 3.5+ hours or more (after allowing for 1-2 hours for Customs.)
The Air Canada concourse is the same as the current United concourse, so the short answer woud be yes, you can take the shuttle between the two. However there have been mixed reports on success with using non-CO/UA boarding passes.
