Is it simply because that is a popular route with which many CO Platinum members fly? Or did I miss something about the upgrade rules?

On CO operated flights unitl March 3 you are better off to use your CO number as you will be Platinum there - if you use your MP number you show up as star gold and will rarely get an upgrade.
