First of all, I want to be clear that I am not complaining anything but just curious and try to understand how the system works as a new 1K.
Yesterday I flied SFO-ORD on UA1717, which is operated by Continental. About 26 hours before the flight, the UA application on my phone showed that the available first-class seats were 16 (out of 16). So I thought that I would have a good chance to be upgraded even though I did not quite understand why no one had been cleared at the time. However, when I checked in about 20 hours before the flight, I found that 14 persons in the upgrade list had been cleared. I did see my name in the waiting list but ranked in the middle of the long list. Not surprisingly, I didn't get a update at the end.
This is quite against my expectation from reading http://mileageplusmergerupdates.com/.../EliteUpgrades
Is it simply because that is a popular route with which many CO Platinum members fly? Or did I miss something about the upgrade rules?
