I think they offered him a main deck CW seat instead of a like-for-like swap to UD. So he said I'll go earlier if you put le in F, which was full. So the OP kept his original UD seat.
I think he was just reporting that it happens.
I think many would appreciate the chance to get an earlier flight if they're early arriving at JFK, but I agree I probably would have declined if they couldn't give me an UD seat.
